Position Summary

We are seeking to fill a Post-Doctoral / Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher position in the SODAW project. The Project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, and focuses on “software development with alternative workforces”. Specifically, the research focuses on the study of software developers in a variety of settings, including corporate, open source communities, crowdsourcing, and inner source. Together with several collaborators around the world, previous publications in this project have focused on onboarding (winner of two best paper awards awarded by the Journal of Systems and Software), episodic volunteers (published in ICSE and TSE), and paid open source developers (published in ICIS 2018).

The researcher will work under the supervision of Dr Klaas-Jan Stol. The appointed person will be expected to make significant contributions to the direction and progress of the project, working closely with the project investigator, and representing UCC in projects meetings and presentations when appropriate.

Applicants are invited from those with a Ph.D. qualification and publications in a directly relevant area such as open source software, crowdsourcing, inner source, or other areas focusing on developers. The researcher:

  • will be responsible for conducting top-quality empirical research, with choice from a range of qualitative and quantitative methods such as grounded theory, statistical methods, repository data mining, and case studies, depending on the researcher’s interests and abilities,

  • is expected to publish in top-tier journals and conferences in software engineering or information systems, and must have a strong publication record as well as excellent writing skills,

  • is expected to work with a network of companies and therefore must have strong industry-communication, collaboration and coordination skills to sustain fruitful industry-academic relationships between the partners and the university,

  • is encouraged to actively initiate and participate in new research funding opportunities including the development of research proposals,

  • will collaborate primarily with the team in UCC but collaborations with other partner universities involved in Lero are encouraged,

  • must be a motivated self-starter, focused and exacting in their work ethic,

  • should also be able to identify collaboration opportunities and synergies.

Appointment at senior postdoctoral level requires PhD qualification, significant prior postdoctoral and/or industrial research experience and an ability to conduct independent research.

The post is based in the Department of Computer Science at University College Cork (UCC). UCC is a Top 2% University and has been voted “University of the Year” for the 5th time since the award’s inception in 2002. UCC is a member of Lero—the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software. As such, the post offers excellent career opportunities as well as opportunities collaborations with industry and researchers in other Irish universities and Institutes of Technology.
