Applications are invited for a 36 month post of a Post doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within UCD School Biosystems and Food Engineering. A postdoctoral position is available based in the UCD Conway Institute and the UCD school of Biosystems Engineering. This position is within an international collaborative project aiming to develop new therapies to treat orthopaedic infection, and has been awarded through the US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership, a tripartite partnership between the United States of America (NIH), Republic of Ireland (SFI-HRB) and Northern Ireland (HSE). Plasma is the fourth state of matter and is generated by applying energy to a gas to generate a range of active components. Cold plasma can be used to inactivate microbes and bacteria that cause human infections, and this project will use cold plasma to tackle the challenges of antimicrobial resistance for human health. The diverse nature of the tissues interfacing with the biofilm-prone orthopaedic implants complicate bacterial eradication, making current treatments prolonged, expensive and often resulting in a significant loss of mobility. The purpose of this project is to address these issues using cold plasma and cold plasma functionalised liquid (PFL), which can be tailored for high micro-biocidal activity coupled with immune stimulatory properties without the risk of antibiotic resistance or cytotoxicity. The project team in UCD will focus on the mechanisms of action, and efficacy of Plasma Activated Liquid (PAL) alone and in combination with FDA and CE approved direct cold plasma treatments to eradicate the different microbial forms implicated in infections. The project also aims to harness plasma functionalised materials and bioprinting to develop safe treatments that can be delivered to wounds and tissues through a range of modalities. The role will also examine approaches to reduce microbial adhesion and assess potential for cytotoxic effects.International Travel and collaboration with the international research consortium will be required. This is an advanced research focused role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
