Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a part-time (0.7FTE)  fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Statistical Science with the SFI Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from September 2021 to contract end date of August 2024.

Organisation:  The Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) is a national, SFI funded, research centre that brings together researchers from NUI Galway, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The prime objective for CÚRAM is to radically improve health outcomes for patients by developing innovative implantable ‘smart’ medical devices to treat major unmet medical needs. Implants will be designed and manufactured to respond to the body’s environment and to deliver therapeutic agents, such as drugs, exactly where needed. Cutting-edge science will develop devices using the very latest research from biomaterials, stem cells and drug delivery and the support of strong clinical collaborations, industry partners and hospital groups to enable rapid translation to the clinic.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will develop statistical models and algorithms to generate multivariate adaptive reference ranges from high dimensional streaming data from medical devices.  The primary focus will be on the development of methods to generate scalable Bayesian adaptive ranges to create ‘person specific’ interactive dashboards in order to identify atypical values that warrant further investigation.

The results of this project will be applicable to all medical device domains that generate streaming data.  The development of early-warning systems in real-time will be a key enabler for enhanced patient monitoring and care.

In addition, the successful candidate, as a key member of CÚRAM, will be responsible for the provision of bio statistical training and support for CÚRAM researchers.

Duties:

  • Develop efficient computational methods to generate personalised reference ranges based on real-time streaming data from medical devices.
  • Provide biostatistical advice for medical device trials for CÚRAM projects.
  • Provide biostatistical training and support to CÚRAM PhD and postdoctoral researchers in research design, analysis and reporting.
  • Keeping up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular, developments in the specific research area.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on areas of shared research interest.
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • Mentor and assists CÚRAM researchers in biostatistical training.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by your Principal Investigator, your School or Institute, or the University.
  • May act as mentor to foreign students on undergraduate placement.
  • May participate in limited teaching hours for own development.  The extent of this must not adversely impact the primary research role.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics, Biostatistics, or a closely related discipline.
  • An active relevant research profile in Statistics, as evidenced by recent research publications, commensurate with experience, in peer reviewed high ranking journals.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, as evidenced by recent teaching experience at university level.
  • Good organisational skills and demonstrated potential to be effective in administrative work.
  • Ability to work well with people and lead others.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in the context of course delivery and statistical consultancy.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Post-doctoral research experience
  • International research collaboration.
  • A formal qualification in teaching.
