Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 25 July 2023.

The Human Cell Atlas: https://www.sanger.ac.uk/collaboration/human-cell-atlas/ project aims to chart the properties of human cells, building a reference map of the human body that can be used to understand human health and to treat disease. Building on this work, we are seeking a research assistant/associate to contribute to a project led by Professor Neil Lawrence applying machine learning to the analysis of transcriptomics data.

The project's focus is the creation of a detailed single-cell and spatial atlas of embryos in late organogenesis, creating an in-silico atlas of the human embryo. The post-holder will be responsible for developing machine learning approaches to large-scale dimensionality reduction, focusing on latent variable techniques such as GPLVM or variational auto-encoders.

Successful applicants will be expected to have:

  • A PhD in a relevant specialist subject;

  • Experience of research in a relevant discipline, demonstrating sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge and research methods to work within established research programmes;

  • Organisational skills, and the ability to manage their own workload;

  • Communication skills, and the ability to communicate their research effectively to technical and non-technical audiences, in person and in writing;

  • Relational-building skills, and the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
