We are looking for an enthusiastic full-time Research Associate to join the group of Dr Simon Mendez-Ferrer within the Haematology Department based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/people/pi/mendez-ferrer). For full information on the group's studies, please see the further information document below.
The project, which is funded by the Medical Research Council, will investigate the regeneration process following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Blood stem cell transplantation is routinely performed for lifesaving procedures in patients with blood cancers or inherited metabolic/immune disorders. However, some patients cannot be transplanted because their niches are defective and others develop a reaction of the graft against their own body (graft vs host disease, which is also a major problem during solid organ transplantation). A major focus will be on novel signalling pathways regulating haematopoietic stem cell proliferation and B lymphopoiesis. These pathways affect the expansion of stem cells after transplantation and possibly the build-up of inflammation, possibly causing reactions such as graft vs host disease, auto-immune diseases, or may affect the success of immunotherapies.
The postholder will be supported by and actively collaborate with other group members. Additionally, this project will be assisted by an active network of collaborators in the fields of immunity and inflammation. However, previous experience in the interphase between inflammation and haematopoiesis, B cell immunology, and/or the required technologies will be considered.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a biomedical field or equivalent. Prior experience of laboratory research and excellent communication skills are essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to plan experiments both independently and in conjunction with other lab members. They will also be responsible for the supervision of a PhD student.
Informal queries regarding the post can be directed to Dr Simon Mendez-Ferrer who can be contacted at [email protected].
Fixed term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2023 in the first instance. Extension may be possible for up to 7 years, dependent on funding and the successful meeting of project milestones.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
