Description

Senior Research and Teaching Associate in Urban Systems and Infrastructure Management (Fixed Term)

Registration website

An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Research and Teaching Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the Digital Cities for Change (DC2) Programme supported by The Ove Arup Foundation.

The DC2 programme investigates how data and digital tools are impacting the mechanics of policy, governance and management of a city and infrastructure planning and design in practice. Specifically, it focuses on the relationship between the operation, planning and management of infrastructure systems and city-level policy outcomes for citizens and the economy. The Senior Research and Teaching Associate will play a key role in expanding the existing research work and collaborations with a thematic focus on place-based leadership for digital innovation in the urban context. He / she will lead the development of the public policy and management aspects of a competency framework for built environment professionals working in digitalisation in a city context, and will co-coordinate the development of educational outputs and training material based on research findings with the PI. It is expected that the successful candidate will carry out research both independently, as well as collaboratively as part of the DC2 team, in relevant areas such as place-based leadership, innovation in the public sector, public value and responsible innovation. Research experience in socio-technical transitions, and comparative, case study and/or action research and qualitative methods is essential.

The key responsibilities and duties are: developing a competency framework with qualitative and quantitative methods; developing excellent original research into digitalisation and 'smartification' in the urban context and producing high-quality research outputs; developing educational outputs and training material based on research findings; and delivering research-based educational outputs and training courses to a high standard using effective and appropriate methods.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and is supported by academics in different fields including engineering, asset management, architecture, urban planning, urban geography and politics. The Senior Research and Teaching Associate is expected to work closely with all of these, as well as digitalisation leaders and practitioners from the public and private sector and civil society organisations. The combination of technical expertise of city and infrastructure modelling and the policy and governance perspective is a distinctive feature of the project.

Appointment at Senior Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD as well as significant relevant postdoctoral experience (or equivalent professional experience).

The post holder will be located in the Civil Engineering Building, West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
