Job No:
516082
Area:
Queensland Brain Institute
Salary (FTE):
Advertised at multiple classifications
Work type:
Full Time - Fixed Term
Location:
St Lucia
The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) was established in 2003 on the St Lucia campus of UQ, and is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 38 Group Leaders. The researchers work to understand the development, organisation and function of the brain. This is done by exploring the neural circuits in the brain, how information is processed in these circuits, how their function results in behavioural outcomes, and how dysfunction of these circuits leads to disorders such as dementia, stroke, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety and depression, and schizophrenia. Ultimately, researchers aim to develop novel therapeutic approaches to treat disorders of neural function, and to improve learning in classrooms and in the workplace.
Details of the Institute may be accessed from the website: www.qbi.uq.edu.au
The Laboratory for Neural Circuits and Behaviour (led by Assoc. Prof. Ethan Scott) uses a very broad experimental platform, ranging from optical physics to mathematics, to discover and describe brain function and behaviour. This work hinges on brain-wide cellular-resolution calcium imaging in the zebrafish model system, complemented by anatomical descriptions, targeted optogenetic manipulations, mathematical modelling, and behavioural analysis. Our goals are both basic (the elucidation of sensory pathways) and translational (the circuit-level modelling of autism endophenotypes), and we welcome new members with either focus. This work is challenging and rewarding, and best suited to researchers who value broad, interdisciplinary approaches to big questions in neuroscience. Culturally, our lab values diversity in all of its forms, and cultivates a mutually supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

As the Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the successful incumbent will be involved in the designing, analysing and conducting of experiments to understand brain development or function in the zebrafish model system. This exciting opportunity is for researchers with past experience in in microscope engineering, optical physics, neuroscience, computational biology, or behavioural analysis and will be offered training in any of these fields once they arrive in the lab. The successful candidate will work both independently and cooperatively, with access to a dedicated support network and superb neuroscience research facilities, to forge new research directions, make important discoveries, and publish high-profile findings. The right individual will be able to take advantage of their existing experience, and be provided an opportunity to grow by developing their own project ideas.
This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.
The successful candidate will posses a PhD in engineering, physics, neuroscience, mathematics, or relevant related fields. They will have demonstrated expertise and strong track record in optical physics/engineering, neuroscience, calcium imaging, image analysis, ethology, or the mathematical modelling of complex systems. The individual will also display an inquisitive nature, with a strong desire to develop new ideas and research directions that will yield high impact findings and further develop their research career. A record of high profile first author publications, experience in scientific presentation at an international level and experience with coding in Matlab, Python or other related languages will be highly regarded for this role.
Visa sponsorship may be available for this appointment.
We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University.
