Brief summary:
This interactive webinar aims to provide postgraduate medical educators with an understanding of how Fatigue Risk Management (FRM) can be integrated within a residency program, by identifying available resources and sharing knowledge learned from two FRM pilot projects.
Fatigue is inevitable in healthcare professions, given that patient care is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Residents are at high risk of fatigue given the demands of the post-graduate training period – a delicate balance of service through patient care provision and on-call coverage, in addition to meeting their own educational expectations. New accreditation standards from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada expect the inclusion of Fatigue Risk Management (FRM) in both a residency program’s curriculum plan as well as safety policy. This interactive webinar aims to provide postgraduate medical educators with the FRM resources currently available, as well as share insight from our own experiences integrating FRM in our own residency programs
- Discuss the role of fatigue as an occupational risk in medical education, with potential risks to the learner, workplace, and patient safety
- Describe the resources available to mitigate risks associated with resident fatigue through implementation of a Fatigue Risk Management Plan
- Share lessons learned from integrating pilot Fatigue Risk Management Plans in two Canadian residency programs
- Instruct teachers/supervisors and learners on strategies to integrate fatigue risk management into their teaching and learner supervision
This 90 minute interactive workshop is geared to Faculty who are teachers, program directors or research supervisors, as well as Senior/Chief residents.
This session has been pre-approved for the Teaching Skills Attainment Award.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 1.5 hours. This program has been reviewed and approved by the University of Ottawa, Office of Continuing Professional Development.
