Computational Social Science Winter School Opportunity 2022

Call for Applications: Computational Social Science Winter School Opportunity 2022 by The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) and The Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC).

The purpose of the Summer Institute is to bring together postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in critical computational social science. The Summer Institute is for both social scientists (broadly conceived) and data scientists (broadly conceived).

Since its founding, SICSS institutes have been held all over the world. SICSS-JIAS/IPATC will be one of 32 partner sites that will host in 2022. SICSS-JIAS/IPATC is unique in its topical focus on exploring the intersections of social and data science in the context of Africa, along with an added purpose to seed and grow a depth of knowledge and appreciation for computational social science in underrepresented communities.

The first two weeks will be held remotely while the third week will combine online and in-person participation (this format is subject to change due to the uncertainties brought on by the pandemic). Some of the activities will require coding, and the institute will support R but participants are welcome to use other languages. SICSS-JIAS/IPATC will be providing a coding-boot camp and support for those who do not have any programming experience.

Benefits

The Computational Social Science Winter School Opportunity does not require payment of tuition, and some sites cover the costs of travel, lodging, and meals.

Eligibility

• Only masters and doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and researchers working outside of academia can participate in this programm. However, there are no restrictions based on citizenship, country of study or country of employment.
• Also, they welcome applicants from all backgrounds and fields of study, especially applicants from groups currently under-represented in computational social science
