Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
Effective immediately, all new Cornell hires, regardless of work location, must be fully vaccinated with an FDA- or WHO- authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine or have obtained a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption by December 8, 2021, or before their start date if after December 8.
Cornell University's Department of Art invites applications for one or two tenure-track assistant professor or early career associate professor in art beginning July 1, 2022, as part of a cohort hire of faculty whose creative practice, teaching, research and scholarship advances topics of social justice and equity at the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.
The Department of Art, part of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, offers both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees with a strong liberal arts component. In 2018, the department renewed its commitment to integrate a wide range of intellectual and representational variables into art practice. The department enjoys a close relationship with Cornell's Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Cornell Library, and diverse academic units across the university including in the humanities, sciences, and technology. Art faculty and students have access to extensive traditional and digital production facilities in the college as well as to the resources of a major research university. The department also offers semester-long undergraduate studio programs in both New York City and Rome, Italy.
The candidate will advance their own creative practice even as they work with us to take the larger project of expanding imaginaries for social change forwards in a way that will support the department’s goal of preparing students for art making in an increasingly diverse and inclusive world. We seek candidates with a strong and creative teaching experience, a significant record in exhibition or other modes of public artistic engagement, and a critical practice that has received wide recognition. Of particular interest for this search are candidates whose practices include one or more of print media, time-based media, installation and performance. Nonetheless, because individual faculty and student practices regularly lie beyond or across these traditional categories, we encourage applications from the full range of media, practice, and background/orientation.
Applicants should have a deep knowledge of their media, but also a demonstrated familiarity with the broad range of current practices, and must be able to teach from a knowledge of art history and theory. Cornell AAP’s B.F.A. and M.F.A. are both oriented toward the interrelationship and integration of interdisciplinary studio practice with content from across the university: the candidate should therefore be able to address art practice in a broad cultural, socio/political, technical, and conceptual context within an atmosphere of close faculty/student involvement and mentoring. Responsibilities include teaching all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs, developing topical seminars, and participating in related departmental service such as admissions and portfolio review, curriculum development, and undergraduate and graduate student advising.
The position requires a master of fine arts degree. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning December 1, 2021 until an adequate pool of candidates for the position has been identified.
Applicants may apply to this hire and the AAP CIVIC Hire in Public Life though they must submit a separate application for each position. Applications to the Department of Art for both hires will be reviewed by the same search committee.
All applicants should submit their materials electronically to Academic Jobs Online at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/20257
Positions will remain open until filled. The department will begin review of applications on December 1st
