Postdoctoral Psychology Fellowship – Additional Position! Opportunity for Sport Psychology and/or Outreach/Consultation Specialization

University Counseling and Psychological Services (UCPS) at Lehigh University is seeking to fill a newly created, additional 12-month postdoctoral fellowship position, with opportunity for specialization in sport psychology and/or outreach/consultation. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2022 (this can be negotiable). The intent of this fellowship experience is to provide university-based practice opportunities and supervision necessary for licensure as a psychologist. These two focused training opportunities are ideally suited for candidates who have specialized interest and skill in working with

underrepresented identities. The postdoctoral fellowship is designed to provide generalist training in group and individual psychotherapy as well as clinical consultation; outreach experience; risk assessment and risk management; experience in alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment; and research and program evaluation opportunities.

The primary focus of UCPS services is to provide culturally sensitive and empirically supported mental health services to the undergraduate and graduate community. These services include group psychotherapy, short-term individual psychotherapy, and walk-in and on-call crisis intervention. It is anticipated that the delivery of these services will involve both face-to-face services and telemental health dependent upon the current pandemic. In addition, the center serves several other roles on campus, including the provision of outreach and peak performance training as well as alcohol, substance use, and addiction treatment. UCPS has a long history of providing doctoral and postdoctoral training, including an established APA accredited internship. The UCPS staff typically consists of six full-time senior staff members, three doctoral interns, two to three postdoctoral fellows, two to three graduate assistants, one to two graduate practicum trainees, and two full-time administrative coordinators.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide direct clinical services (i.e. face-to-face and telemental health) including group and

individual psychotherapy, intake, assessment, and crisis intervention

• Provide consultation and outreach services (i.e. face-to-face and telemental health) to students,

faculty, and staff

• Assist with research and program evaluation efforts

• Assist with crisis management and on-call services

The Sport Specialization – The full range of services provided to student athletes is a growing area of specialization within the field of psychology, particularly within university settings. Lehigh’s UCPS is well integrated into the Division I Athletic Program at the university – playing an integral role as a partner in the delivery of leadership-based work; providing delivery of peak performance training at the team and individual level; engaging in a ‘train the trainer’ model of service delivery via coach consultation; and serving as the primary intervention point for clinical concerns as they arise. Fellows will have opportunity to engage in shadowing and/or implementation of applied peak performance interventions, consultation, and counseling with student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department staff as developmentally appropriate to the fellow’s experience level. The fellow will join the sport psych team at UCPS, meeting regularly with experienced sport psychologists and sport psych trainees to discuss clinical and performance-based issues and interventions. The fellow may also have an opportunity to conduct research on or with intercollegiate student-athletes and coaches as opportunities arise. The fellowship opportunity at Lehigh is well positioned to provide the applied experiences desired by and necessary for those with career aspirations of working as a collegiate sport psychologist. Recent graduates of our program have gone on to careers as Division I collegiate sport psychologists, private practitioners, as well as employed by Olympic and professional sports teams and organizations.

The Outreach/Consultation Specialization – While all trainees at UCPS are actively involved in the outreach programing at the center, a postdoctoral fellow who has a strong interest in the development, management, and provision of outreach and consultation services would have opportunity to work closely with the Director of Outreach with a particular focus on campus mental health needs as it relates to DEI. This postdoctoral fellow would partner with the Director of Outreach for a variety of activities including but not limited to: developing and providing outreach programming, providing outreach and consultation training to doctoral interns and practicum counselors, and conducting outreach evaluation. They would also assist the Director of Outreach with administrative tasks pertaining to outreach delivery, liaison relationships with campus partners, systems level consultation, and social media for the center. Furthermore, UCPS and this fellowship program recognizes the unique needs and issues of different groups on campus, including, but not limited to, racial/ethnic/religious minority students, international students, women, and LGBTQIA+ students. Lehigh University is a private, co-educational university located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1865 by Asa Packer as a four-year technical school, but has grown to include studies in a wide variety of disciplines. As of November 2020, the university was comprised of 5,203 undergraduates, 1864 graduate students, 548 full-time professors, and a staff of around 1300.

The university has four colleges: the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, and the College of Education. A new fifth college, The College of Health admitted its first inaugural class during the 2020-2021 academic year. 

Applicants are required to have completed their doctoral internship prior to the start date, have been granted their doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology by August 1, 2022 and have previous university counseling center experience.
