Responsibilities/Job Description
VID Specialized University has up to two 100% positions as a PhD Research Fellow available within the project titled “Negotiating life strategies in transnational migration. Religion, work, and family life among Thai migrant women in Norway” (THAIMIG). THAIMIG consists of eight researchers from Norway and Thailand and is financed by VID’s Excellence in Research fund. The project explores the role and significance of religion, as well as social networks in relation to employment and social inclusion among Thai migrant women from a transnational perspective. By combining interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, migration studies, religious studies and theology, the project seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the temporal, spatial, religious, and relational dimensions of migrants’ lives, and how these influence migrants’ life strategies and transnational lives.
We look for an empirical project that investigates the challenges and opportunities Thai migrant women experience in Norway, and the interconnections between these and their work, social networks and life strategies. The project should apply qualitative research methods, preferably an ethnographic approach. The project can explore several of the following issues: migrants’ aspirations and their connection to their social networks and transnational activities, how migrants negotiate their life strategies considering structural opportunities and limitations, the impact of social networks, in particular ethnic networks on employment among migrants. The PhD project seeks to enhance knowledge about migrants in general and Thai migrant women in particular, this contributing to strengthening the service provision of civil society organizations, including faith-based organisations, and welfare state institutions to Thais in Norway. In addition, the project aims to provide a more holistic view of these migrant women’s lives.
