Careers Beyond the Postdoc - Scientific Editing & Publishing

Join us virtually to meet PhD professionals who migrated to successful, non-academic careers in scientific editing & publishing. The first 30 mins will be a panel discussion, where we'll discuss their career path, responsibilities, and experiences beyond academia. This will be followed by 30 mins of Q&A with the attendees. Biography of panelists:

Dr. Lisa D. Chong 

As the Editor of Science's Insights, Dr. Lisa Chong oversees Editorials, Perspectives, Policy Forums, Letters, and Books sections. She joined Science in 1998 and handled research in the biological sciences as an Associate and Senior Editor. Dr. Chong received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and doctoral degree from Yale University in cell biology in 1993. She did postdoctoral work in La Jolla, CA at The Scripps Research Institute and the Burnham Institute, and also at the National Institutes of Health, where her studies spanned signal transduction, cell migration, and neuronal development. In addition to research discoveries, Dr. Chong is also interested in science communication and the interface between science and culture.

Dr. Paul-André Genest

Dr. Paul-André Genest is a Publisher at Wiley where he is responsible for the management of a portfolio of 50+ journals in the Life Sciences and a team of 5 employees. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University where he teaches a yearly course on scholarly publishing. Previously, he worked as an Associate Publisher and Scientific Editor at Elsevier. Dr. Genest has a BSc (Biology) degree and a MSc (Microbiology-Immunology) degree from the Université Laval in Québec City, Canada, and a PhD (Molecular Parasitology) from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He held two postdoc research positions at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Dr. Dale Seaton

Dr. Dale Seaton is an Executive Publisher at Elsevier managing 15 titles in their Parasitology and Entomology journal portfolio. He works with 6 different academic societies and around 50 editors worldwide. He also organizes international scientific conferences. Prior to Elsevier, He was the Editor of the Novartis magazine, Pathways, and prior to that he was the Editor of the monthly medical journal Current Therapeutics, circulated to doctors in Australia. Dr. Dale Seaton completed a BSc in Zoology, and PhD in Veterinary Parasitology at Edinburgh University, UK, and held post-doc appointments at La Trobe University and Melbourne University, Australia. He has worked in medical and scientific publishing for 17 years, and between his research career and his publishing career, he has also spent a remarkable 4-5 months working at Blockbuster video!
