About this Event

This session will be hosted by Douglas Halliday of Durham University. The session will consist of a talk on supervision of interdisciplinary students from the supervisor’s perspective. This will then be followed by a Q and A session.

About the speaker:

Douglas is Director of the Durham University Global Challenges Centre for Doctoral Training supporting a cohort of 25 international students from 17 developing nations to undertake multidisciplinary doctoral research projects across 15 academic departments exploring solutions to one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He is also a Co-Director of Durham Energy Institute and the Director of the Multidisciplinary Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy which trains doctoral candidates across science and social sciences. The Energy CDT provides a multidisciplinary training environment helping doctoral candidates to understand the breadth and complexity of the whole energy system. He is Professor in the Department of Physics and undertakes research into new materials for third generation photovoltaic devices. He is the current Chair of the UK Council for Graduate Education and has helped organise the UKCGE International Conference on Developments in Doctoral Education and Training, held every two years since 2013. Previously, he was Dean of Durham’s Graduate School from 2005-2010 and a recipient of a 2009 THE Award for Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Energy Institute, and a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE.

This workshop is part of a week long series of events. Check out the full programme of events here.

About the organisers

Launched in 2018, the Interdisciplinary Research Network at the University of Stirling was set up by PhD students doing interdisciplinary research. The aims of our group are to build a support network, share resources across faculties, promote a research culture of collaboration and create events and training tailored around our needs as interdisciplinary researchers.

The Interdisciplinary Symposium is supported by the Stirling Fund.
