Purpose Statements:Purpose 1: To bring about consensus around school policing reform that contributes to positive and safe learning environments and outcomes for all children, with specific emphasis on diverse populations to prevent Juvenile Justice system involvement.Purpose 2: To bring about consensus to re-evaluate and then reallocate resources to support a team of professionals equipped to move from crisis response in schools to prevention by employing an appropriate mix of trained staff, including counselors, social workers, nurses and school psychologists, to meet student needs and create positive and safe learning environments as they collaborate on improving student services.Purpose 3: To understand and expand knowledge about the intersection between toxic stress, trauma, learning development and behavior with school and community policing and racial justice for our youth to break the school to prison pipeline.Purpose 4: To create and support safe learning environments that promote feeling safe within oneself and from the risk of physical and psychological harm from others.Purpose 5: To create a report and recommendations as a product from the Roundtable that will be shared with the public and public officials. Who We Are:The Children's Policy and Law Initiative of Indiana (CPLI)CPLI was established in 2013 to reform laws, policies and practices that contribute to the criminalization of children in Indiana. It is one of 53 organizations in 43 states that belongs to theNational Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN). The NJJN leads a movement of state-based advocacy groups working toward a fairer youth justice system. CPLI advocates for systemic changes for children so that programs, policies and practices are developmentally-appropriate, equitably-administered and fair, and provide the necessary support for a child’s successful transition to adulthood. What This Community Initiative Does:Trauma and Resilience Through a Cultural Lens is a community initiative to expand knowledge and understanding about culturally-responsive, trauma-informed practices that can effectively address toxic stress that students experience within school and the community due to systemic racism, violence, economic disparities, community policing and racial injustice. Our goal is to create change within schools and our community that supports our youth and prevents them from entering the school-to-prison pipeline.
