Corporate social responsibility has become a major buzzword in today's business sector, seen as a key to a positive public image and the ability to attract and keep quality employees. This trend is changing the face of corporate engagement in nonprofits, both in terms of giving and employee volunteerism. These new opportunities for nonprofits to attract funds, visibility, and volunteers for programs are coupled with new challenges to nonprofits who want to engage businesses. What actions might nonprofits need to take in order to attract and make effective use of these resource streams? How might development professionals and volunteer managers build and maintain fruitful relationships with businesses interested in supporting nonprofit work? What are some ethical concerns that nonprofits may encounter with increased corporate engagement?

Please join Dustianne North (Lead Instructor, UC Berkeley Professional Program in Fundraising and Volunteer Management), who welcomes expert panelists Karolo Aparicio (San Francisco Foundation) and Estelle Davis (San Francisco Exploratorium) for a lively discussion of this important topic in nonprofit management.

Participants will gain:

  • Awareness of the evolution of corporate giving and corporations’ motivations for giving
  • Understanding of the giving vehicles used by corporations and how to interface with these effectively
  • Ability to utilize several different models of engaging corporate volunteers
  • Ability to locate and utilize corporate prospect research tools
  • Skills for building corporate relationships
  • Ideas to inform ethical practice in working with corporate partners
  • A realistic assessment of organizational capacity to pursue corporate relationships, and a start toward strategic plans for improved capacity

Professional Program in Fundraising and Volonteer Management, UC Berkeley Extension

One of the biggest challenges facing most nonprofit agencies is either finding or retaining staff talent in the areas of fundraising and volunteer management. Central to both of these skill sets are the marketing, planning and management capacities needed in most nonprofits. The Professional Program in Fundraising and Volunteer Management addresses these staffing and volunteer challenges by bringing together highly experienced practitioners as instructors and staff members from small and large nonprofits. Program content takes you well beyond the basics by engaging you in the processes of donor cultivation, along with the design and implementation of volunteer and board member recruitment and retention. Focused on the unique challenges in the Bay Area as well as drawing upon its many resources, this program is jointly sponsored by the Mack Center on Nonprofit and Public Sector Management in the Human Services at UC Berkeley and UC Berkeley Extension.
