Lesley-Ann Noel will present 'The Black Experience in Design', an anthology edited by Berry, Collie, Laker, Noel, Rittner & Walters.
About this event
Welcome to the Pluriversal Design SIG's BookClub! In this Book Club, we focus on the works of authors from all over the 'pluriverse'. We intentionally focus on the works of authors from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and their diasporas. In our sessions, we discuss how their works impact us as designers.
For this book club, Lesley-Ann Noel will introduce the 'Black Experience in Design', a book that she co-edited with Berry, Collie, Laker, Rittner & Walters. She will provide an overview of the book, share the research and design process of the book and lead a discussion on how designers and researchers can use this book to create conversations about pluriversality.
The Black Experience in Design: Identity,
Reflection & Expression presents the work of six editors and over 70
designers, artists, curators, educators, students, and researchers who
represent a wide cross-section of Black diasporic identities and
multi-disciplinary practices. It is an anthology that shares a range of
perspectives and spotlights teaching practices, research, stories, and
conversations from a Black/African diasporic lens.
Through the voices represented, this text exemplifies the inherently collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of design, providing access to ideas and topics for a variety of audiences, meeting people as they are and wherever they are in their knowledge about design. Ultimately, The Black Experience in Design serves as both inspiration and a catalyst for the next generation of creative minds tasked with imagining, shaping, and designing our future.
Lesley-Ann Noel is an Assistant Professor at the College of Design of North Caroling State University. She is the co-chair of the Pluriversal Design Special Interest Group.
